Corporate Tax Form 1120 is due by April 15, 2025.
Extend your deadline until October 15. Guaranteed Approval.
C-Corporations are a popular business structure that operates as a distinct tax entity. This means the corporation itself is responsible for paying taxes on its income. A key characteristic of C-Corporations is double taxation: the corporation pays taxes on its profits, and shareholders are taxed again on the dividends they receive.
To stay compliant with IRS regulations, C-Corporations must file Form 1120 each year, reporting income, gains, losses, deductions, and credits.
In this article, we will cover the basics of Corporate tax filing requirements, deadlines, extensions and more.
1. C-Corporation Tax Filing Requirements
2. When is the Deadline to File Corporate Tax Form 1120?
3. How to File a 1120 Extension?
4. What are the penalties associated with Form 1120?
5. Easily File Your C-Corp Tax Extension with ExpressExtension
A C-corporation is recognized as a separate taxpaying entity for federal tax purposes.
C-Corporations are generally subject to double taxation, which means they are required to pay corporate taxes on profits, and their shareholders are required to pay individual taxes on their dividends. Every year, C-Corporations are required to file Form 1120 with the IRS to report their income, gains, losses, deductions, and credits.
The deadline to file corporate tax return Form 1120 is on or before the 15th of the fourth month following the end of the tax year.
If the C-Corp operates on a calendar tax year, the deadline to file Form 1120 for the 2024 tax year is April 15, 2025.
If your business doesn’t follow the calendar year basis, find your correct due date here.
Thus, if you are unable to file form 1120, you can E-File 7004 and get an extension for up to 6 months.
C-Corporations that need more time to prepare and file their Form 1120 can request additional time by filing Form 7004.
C-Corporations that file Form 7004 on or before the original filing deadline will get an automatic extension of up to 6 months of additional time from the IRS to file Form 1120. This extension is automatic, so you are not required to provide any explanations for requesting additional time.
C-Corporations with a tax year ending on June 30 can request a 7-month extension (Unless they request an extension for Form 1120-POL).
Note : Filing Form 7004 can extend the filing deadline for C-Corp tax returns but not the deadline to pay the taxes owed. Any pending tax payments must be paid by the original tax form deadline.
There are two types of penalties if Form 1120 is filed late or if there is a late payment of taxes.
If the return is over 60 days late, the minimum penalty is either the tax due or $510.
To avoid penalties, request a 6 month extension with Form 7004.
