Missouri Tax Extensions: Business, Personal, Information and Nonprofit Tax Returns
Missouri automatically extends a six month of time for both individual and business income tax
if you already filed a federal extension. However,application for extension of time to file for
state tax is required (Form MO-60 and Form MO-7004) on some specific conditions like if you owe some
tax to the state or if you want to extend the period beyond federal extension or if you want
only Missouri extension and not federal extension.

Who should file a Form MO-7004?
Missouri grants an automatic extension of time to file corporation income and corporation franchise tax to any corporation that has a federal extension (Form 7004). A federal extension does not extend the due date for Financial Institution taxes.You do not need to file a Form MO-7004 (Application for Extension of Time to File - Corporation Income Tax/ Franchise Tax Return) unless:
- You expect to owe a tax liability for the period. Form MO-7004 and payment are due on or before the due date of the return.
- You want a Missouri extension but not a federal extension. See "Note" below for exception. Form MO-7004 is due on or before the due date of the return. A copy of Form MO-7004 must be enclosed with the Missouri return when filed. An approved Form MO-7004 extends the due date up to 180 days.
- You seek a Missouri extension exceeding the federal automatic extension period. Form MO-7004 must be filed on or before the end of the federal automatic extension period.
Note: You are not required to file a Form MO-7004 if:
- You have an approved federal extension. (Enclose a copy of your federal extension when you file your Missouri return.)
- You do not expect to owe additional tax.
- You anticipate receiving a refund.

You do not need to file a Form MO-60 (Application for Extension of Time to File) unless:- You expect to owe a tax liability for the period. - You want a Missouri extension but not a federal extension. See "Note" below for exception on individual income tax returns only. Form MO-60 is due on or before the due date of the return. A copy of Form MO-60 must be enclosed with the Missouri return when filed. An approved Form MO-60 extends the due date up to six months for the individual income tax returns, and five months for fiduciary, and partnership income tax returns.
- You seek a Missouri extension exceeding the federal automatic extension period. Form MO-60 must be filed on or before the end of the federal automatic extension period.
Note: Individual income tax filers are not required to file a Form MO-60 if:
- You have an approved federal extension. (Enclose a copy of your federal extension
when you file your Missouri return.)
AND
a) You do not expect to owe additional income tax.
OR
b) You anticipate receiving a refund.
Fiduciary and partnership filers will be granted an automatic extension of time to file until September 17, 2024.
